The Los Angeles Opera’s 2008/2009 Season starts with a bang, featuring the US premiere of Oscar winning composer Howard Shore’s The Fly, commissioned by the LA Opera and conducted by Maestro Domingo. This co-production with Théâtre du Châtelet represents the culmination of an unparalleled artistic collaboration between some of the unquestioned leaders in the world of entertainment and creative arts. The libretto is by Tony Award-winning playwright David Henry Hwang, skillfully drawing out the romantic and tragic elements of this “profound parable on love and loss” (Time Magazine), and set design is by Dante Ferretti, whose credits include the movies Sweeney Todd and The Aviator. The fine cast includes Canadian bass-baritone Daniel Okulitch in the title role. The weekend getaway pairs this exciting new opera with a completely new production of Puccini’s Il Trittico, again tapping an exceptional pool of world-class artistic talent. William Friedkin directs the first two operas, Il Tabarro and Suor Angelica, with outstanding casts, including Salvatore Licitra, Anja Kampe, Mark Delavan, John Del Carlo, Sondra Radvanovsky and Larissa Diadkova. Woody Allen makes his operatic directorial debut with the comedic Gianni Schicchi, featuring Thomas Allen, Laura Tatulescu and Jill Grove. Music Director James Conlon leads the LA Opera orchestra.
